Despite having mild winters over the previous two seasons here in the Hamptons, there are still a few things that need to be done around your yard to get it ready for freezing temperatures.
- Winterize outdoor plumbing.
- Outdoor showers. In early November turn off outside water sources and drain outdoor showers and hoses. Remove shower heads and garden hose nozzles and store them inside for the winter.
- Irrigation systems. Schedule the closing of your irrigation system with your lawn care professional. Be mindful to keep your system on for at least three to four weeks following your fall over-seeding treatment to help new seeds germinate.
- Outdoor water fountains. Water should be drained from fountains; take this opportunity to clean any residue or mildew off the fountain surface. Remove the pump/electrical components and store them indoors for the winter. Finally, cover the fountain to protect it from the winter freeze/thaw.
- Schedule pool closing. Have your pool company schedule a winterization and closing date for your pool.
- Store deck furniture or cover. Move your deck furniture to indoor storage or cover it up for the winter to protect and extend its useful life.
- Winterize outdoor AV equipment. Disconnect outdoor speakers and televisions and bring them indoors for the winter. If you do not wish to bring them inside, a snug fitting cover will protect them from the elements and extend their useful life.
